It is hard for me to step back and be unbiased about this book. Jonathan Moon is a friend and I have written a novel with him. In fact I wrote the forward for this book. But I put my money where my mouth is and I purchased a copy of this book even though I have read most of the stories.Jonathan Moon is a self-styled 'horrorcore' writer. Let that name bounce around your head for a moment then look at the cover of the book. Do I really need to say that the stories inside are on the bizarre side? Recently there has been a big push toward the 'bizarro' genre and one would think this book is as well, what with stories that take place in assisted living homes and deal with Alzheimer's to the running stories in Grasshopper Season. One of my favorite stories is called Owing Ira about a man who helps out his neighbor but ends up getting in to much more than he bargained for when he sees something he shouldn't have.
There are some straight forward horror stories but I like the fringe stuff that doesn't fit into any other categories and there are plenty of those in this book.
So do yourself a favor and check out one of the best indies on the market right now.

Mr Moon Nightmares Jonathan Moon 9781451577242 Books Reviews
This book will suck you in, shock you, knock you about, and have you begging for more. Entertaining and well written...I dare you to enter the mind of Jonathan Moon...you will not be disapointed...and you may never want to leave.
I have no idea who the intended audience is for this book, but I'd be greatly surprised if it's someone other than ten-year-olds ... because it seems to have been WRITTEN by someone with about that age's writing skills.
I tried to stick with it long enough for something to happen -- especially something scary -- but nothing ever did. That and the fact that the formatting is absolutely awful made this one unreadable for me.
This very well might be a solid set of stories. I won't know until the digital edition is extensively cleaned up. The kindle version boasts, hands down, the worst ebook formatting I've ever seen. The writing might be great, but the product is severely lacking. Page numbers, headers, footers, random images, bad breaks, bad margins, font incongruity, weird symbols, -- it's clear that it's just a straight across scan of the hard copy lazily converted to ebook with no attention paid to quality control as it's displayed on an e-reader. Ridiculously unreadable at any price. I'm seeing this more and more in small press horror and there's no excuse. Get it together publishers.
I've loved short story collections since I started reading books, and to this day a fair percentage of my reading is short form. If I hear good things about a collection or just happen to stumble upon something interesting, chances are I'll give it a shot. Especially if it's in the dusky world of the nasty and creepy, or the October Country as Bradbury described it so well. This book definitely falls into that category.
'Mr Moon's Nightmares' is intriguing from the off - the cover implies all kinds of strangeness (and looks much, much better in real life too, the colours are wonderful!) and the title is ballsy enough to suggest a writer confident in his vision and talent. There's a running setting to a large number of the stories here - a grouping of small towns in Idaho where the characters in the book live and die. It works well and the further you read the more aware you become of the surroundings; the possibly cursed woods become more familiar, the towns themselves develop their own nuances - rather than globe-hopping from story to story you keep finding yourself in increasingly eerily recognizable places which just ratchets up the unease as you know bad things happen in these parts.
Possibly my favourite story in the book is Grasshopper Season, a fable in a number of parts that threads it's way in-between the other stories. It builds beautifully, starting with the experience of one man and quickly accelerating until entire towns are witness to an ancient monster and his unlikely legions. Jonathan Moon is excellent in his depictions of the wild country and the isolated small town, where practically all of these stories take place, painting the background in broad yet lush strokes and filling in the details through the eyes of the characters. This is a confident and talented voice and I imagine he will only get stronger the more he writes.
Other stand-out stories for me include 'Handful of Nails & a Lottery Ticket,' a classic curse story given a twist; 'A Pretty Death' which may be the most poetically written horror in the collection; 'The Little Box of Ladybugs,' a childhood tale gone terribly bad, and 'God Dog,' a reminisce told through letters and news reports of a completely cracked mind.
As well as trad shorts the book also contains two longer stories and a few flash/poem/limerick pieces, all nicely paced throughout. Subject matter reaches from the straight horror (vampires, witches, serial killers) to the serious and thoughtful (Alzheimers, religious lunacy, bullying).
Definitely recommended to fans of strange and unusual horror fiction, and I look forward to much more from Mr Moon in this genre!
